Kardinal Offishall-Not 4 Sale review

If you haven’t heard Kardinal Offishall’s album “Quest for Fire: Firestarter, Vol. 1,” then consider yourself deprived of some great reggae influenced hip-hop. Bubbling in the underground circuit in the states for years (even though he’s a bigger name in his native Toronto), Kardinal always seemed one song away from blowing up in the states. It was with pleasant surprise to see rap/r&b crooner Akon take notice placing him on his Konlive imprint releasing Kardinal’s newest album in four years “Not 4 Sale.” read more from vapors magazine

Jake One-White Van Music review

Jake One-White Van Music 4/5
It appears that the independent producers are making the best hip-hop records lately. From Marco Polo's "Port Authority" to S1's "Music Box," the bunch of rapper-one producer compilations have been the most promising albums in recent memory. Jake One is no different as he releases "White Van Music," one of the best albums to come out in 2008. READ MORE

Foreign Exchange-Leave It All Behind review

Foreign Exchange-Leave It All Behind 4 stars
2004's release of Nicolay and Phonte's "Connected" album was a testament to the power of cyberspace bringing us together. Due to Nicolay and Phonte's distance making it difficult to record the project together in a studio, the duo opted to produce the album via Yahoo Instant Messenger crafting a sonic masterpiece. Seamlessly blending aspects of hip-hop, electronic, house and soul music making a modern day classic. Now, four years later, they release the sophomore Foreign Exchange project 'Leave It All Behind.' Preach interviews The One for Vapors Magazine

Taken from Vapors Magazine
The One: SuperPsychoSexy
Words by: Preach Jacobs

What happened to the anger in our music? What happened to our sense of purpose? Treading on the heels of the Civil Rights Movement from the late 60’s to 70’s, you had a mergence of black music engulfed in pride, frustration and an independence that wasn’t seen in our music prior.

In the midst of all of this, soul and funk music was conceived. Influenced by the church, mixed with the electric guitar and synths, this music stands the test of time. Somewhere along the way, black music lost its soul, but thankfully OM’s new artist The One recaptures the essence of Funkadelic and Curtis Mayfield and mixes it with the hip hop/neo-soul sound of Jay Dilla - a sound that’s vintage and yet ahead of its time. The One observes his musical upbringing and explains where the sound for his debut album “SuperPsychoSexy” comes from. read more

Preach interviews The Wailers

what's up party people? this is preacher man with another update on what's goin on. first off you can check out the interview did with The Wailers for the Free-Times.

or you can peep it here:
Wail On

The Wailers at Headliners

BY PREACH JACOBS

The Wailers
Headliners: Thursday, June 12

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone that hasn’t heard of Bob Marley and the Wailers. The reggae legends sold over 250 million records worldwide, are considered one of the greatest bands of all time by pretty much every mainstream music magazine, and even Time named Exodus album of the century. So Marley’s specter left some big shoes to fill when then-19-year-old Elan Atias stepped in as lead vocalist in 1997.

“It was all love when I stepped to the plate,” Atias says. “Most people ask if people would give me a hard time stepping in, and I say no. Actually, people thought I was one of Bob’s kids. I would tell them, ‘If I was you would know. I would be there getting my share with everyone else.’”

In a time where the digital age creates a new star in seconds, Atias feels that the younger generation will still grasp the significance of the band, which is currently working on new songs.

“I think musically, this is a renaissance period,” Atias says. “This is a great time to be an artist. You can put out a great record now, with technology, for under two grand. What really affects everything are the labels signing artists and pushing s#!t. Now, we can see the power being given back to the artists.”

Truly an artists’ artist, Atias is optimistic about the future of music and using his influence to make a difference.

“In the music, there’s a soul and people try to take that away by not having substance,” Atias says. “I said in one of my songs ‘I got a voice / but what is it worth if it fills air with empty words.’”

You wouldn’t expect anything less from a band that’s made some of the most consciously aware music of our times. As The Wailers continue to perform and make new music, they embody the pureness of music. Music seems to have lost that, but Atias believes that regaining those moments are simple.

“Be true to your art,” Atias says. “That’s what we’re supposed to do. That’s our jobs, and that’s what I’ll continue to do.”

Headliners is located at 700 Gervais St. The Executives open. Doors open at 8 p.m.; tickets are $23 ($20 in advance). Call 796-2333 or visit headlinerscolumbia.com for more information.

that's it for now. more to come soon. be easy!

Preach interviews DMC (from Run-DMC)

what's up yall? this is preach w/ a quick update for you all. check out my interview w/ dmc on the free-times.

you can read it here:
Running with DMC

A hip-hip legend talks about his history, his adoption and the state of the game.

BY PREACH JACOBS
Run-DMC changed my life. The group that nurtured a new culture while breaking barriers were the biggest rap group in the world during the '80s. The first rap group to go gold, then multi-platinum, Run-DMC invented everything that rappers are trying to do now. Before Jay Z had his own Reeboks, Run-DMC had an endorsement deal with Adidas. Run-DMC became a group that changed the world by putting hip-hop music in homes, validating a culture that people was sure would be a fad. But what if none of this would have happened? This is a question that founding member DMC — nee Darryl McDaniels — wondered after getting some life altering news at the age of 35.

"Around the year 2000, I got really depressed," McDaniels says. "After [Run-DMC DJ Jam Master] Jay got murdered, I thought about everything in my life. I thought about growing up, going to school and starting Run-DMC. I began to realize that if I died tomorrow, the only thing people would know about me was Run-DMC. So, I wanted to write a book about the life of Daryl McDaniels."

McDaniels had always believed that he was born on May 31 in 1964 in Hollis, Queens, until he called his mother for information for his autobiography.

"I called my mom and asked her how much I weighed, what hospital I was born in so I could put it in the book," McDaniels says. "I get off the phone and an hour later my father calls back and tells me that I was adopted."

McDaniels had always believed that there was a void in his life leading to his depression, and believing this new information would fill that void he had been feeling. Empowered by the newfound information, McDaniels decided to act and get heavily involved with outreach efforts concerning foster care along with trying to locate his biological mother. "At first I was in denial when my father told me this," McDaniels says. "I thought there was no way. I started thinking about my friends joking with me saying I was adopted because I didn't look like my family. So, I went to meet my birth mother and the first thing that went through my head was: Finally, there's some people that look like me."

Due to the fame of Run-DMC, McDaniels says that VH1 had contacted him constantly about joining **The Surreal Life** and other reality shows that were in the works at the time. Always refusing because the shows didn't seem to hold a significance for him, McDaniels called the station back to ask if they would want to do a show documenting the search for his biological mother. The station agreed after some resistance — McDaniels says that execs were against it because the show would be "too real" — and filmed an Emmy-winning documentary in 2006 titled **DMC: My Adoption Journey**, further convincing McDaniels of his calling.

"I look at the way my family raised me," McDaniels says. "I look at all of the blessings I had. I wanted to do something for those kids that are in foster care and help them get some of the attention that I received. I want all of those foster kids to look at DMC. I'm from the same hood, look at what happened to me."

Since getting involved with adoption care promotion, he's been presented with the Congressional Angels in Adoption Award for his efforts as well as creating a summer camp reaching out to over 170 foster kids. Now, his newest honor is being presented by Hard Rock Café, giving him a platform to speak about his passion.

"Hard Rock does a lot of stuff to touch people," McDaniels says. "No matter how much senators and legislators try to do things, it can't compare to how music is able to touch the community. We as musicians are in a better position because we are not speaking at the people, or to the people, but rather for them."

Run-DMC is the only hip-hop act that's been featured in Hard Rock, an honor that McDaniels doesn't take lightly. But he's still dedicated to the music, believing that it'll be a tool to help with his foster care efforts.

"When it comes to hip-hop, we [Run-DMC] took the standpoint from rock 'n' roll," McDaniels says. "We didn't say the music was just for a hip-hop audience; we did the music for everybody. So I feel privileged to be with these rock gods. I feel even more that I have a responsibility, a sacredness with the music."

Still active in the studio, DMC released his first solo offering, **Checks, Thugs and Rock 'n' Roll**, in 2006, and is working on a new project now. Looking back at the culture he helped build, DMC sees the hip-hop culture going down a path unseen in the group's hey-day.

"Today, channels like MTV and BET are disgraces to the culture," McDaniels says. "And it's not just with the television and radio, it's the same people that are supposed to be hip-hop heads. Look at the difference between a **XXL** and **Rolling Stone**. If Tom Petty put out a new record tomorrow, he will get the cover, there will be a 32-page spread about his career, et cetera. If Afrika Bambaata did a new album, it would be on page 99 of the hip-hop publication. There is no respect for the culture."

Regardless of how the culture is presented in the media, McDaniels still is optimistic about what lies ahead. Aside from being in the studio, he's working on a follow-up to his **King of Rock: Respect, Responsibility and My Life with Run-DMC** debut autobiography. As his first book was before he knew about his adoption, he's anxious to write about his new experiences.

"After the reunion of my birth mother, it was like living life all over again," McDaniels says. "I had new experiences and saw these new people, makes me want to make music for these people that were in the same position. You can't start a book at chapter two, so now I'm going back to the beginning."

editorial: the injustice of sean bell

how you guys doing? going start things off with the links to this week's black news layouts i did that you can check: Ent. pdf:BLKN-042408-06.pdf as well as jump article .pdfs: BLKN-042408-11.pdf and Black News photo showcase week 2:BLKN-042408-12.pdf.

here's my new editorial that will be in this week's black news that you can read now:

Editorial: The Injustice of Sean Bell

I remember when I was around ten or 11 years old, my father went to a relative's house on a Sunday afternoon. It's one of those 'distant' relatives, where it was merely a relation by blood, not of heart. But one thing I could remember while accompanying my father was being there with one of my cousins. She was probably around three years old, and the house was pretty much infested with roaches. I wouldn't dare sit down, as my three-year-old cousin attempted to talk to me. She had on a pink shirt that was smeared with punch, diapers that needed to be changed and she held on to a tattered stuffed animal that looked like it had seen better days. In the midst of her telling me about the house being cold the night before, I saw one of the bugs crawl across her bare foot. What was worse than that was her response, or rather her lack of one. She didn't budge. Didn't flinch, didn't jump, didn't go 'eww,' but rather continued with her monologue of how cold it was the night before. Her level of numbness to the situation, regardless of how terrible it may have been, haunted me and haunts me to this day. So, when I heard the verdict in the Sean Bell case, I felt a familiar numbness. I didn't flinch, as if I am accustomed to the bug of injustice crawling over me and my people on a regular basis.

New York mayor Michael Bloomberg in response to the shooting that took place two years ago said "it sounds to me like excessive force was used," and calling the shooting "inexplicable" and "unacceptable". 50 bullets were hailed at Bell and two of his friends after Bell's bachelor party (the two friends were also wounded).

My intention isn't to recap the case, or to question whether it was the prosecution's fault for letting this happen, or even go on an angry anti-police tirade. Instead it's to try and find some type of answer to help rid me of this numbness I feel towards the injustice system a sentiment that is shared by people of color. Is it a clear issue of black versus white (three of the five officers involved in the shooting were also black), or is it an issue of abuse of power over a powerless community? These are questions that I really don't answers for and dammit I'm frustrated. We seem to be developing into a mature nation (with Obama being a viable presidential candidate, you can't help but believe change is in fact on the horizon). But with an the Sean Bell tragedy, I really question this nation's ability to grow up. Are we ready for a black president? Or an even better question is do we have a police force that actually serves and protects us? I'm speaking from a perspective of never having had a speeding ticket, never being arrested, never doing anything illegal. But yet, when I see a cop car, I feel an inexplicable anxiety. Why do I feel this way for someone that is supposed to serve and protect me? Shouldn't I cheer their very existence and honk my horn with a smile when I see them like we would if we saw Spider Man swinging from the top of the state house across Main street?

My heart is saddened and my spirits are low as once again I feel that we are treated like second class citizens. Being a part of the hip-hop community, it's hard not to feel that law enforcement is afraid of young people of color. Again, I don't have the answers but I do have questions and hopefully something will come of them. In this day and age, I do hope that we will achieve change and eventually feel that we, as a people, are appreciated not just tolerated and protected. Be easy. Be strong. -PJ

welcome to 'blutopia'

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
how you guys doing? this is preach with a long awaited update. first off as you can see we finally got the first run of 'blutopia' up. for those that don't know, blutopia is the comic strip of a character (named preach...yea, that was a stretch) who is an emcee/journalist that works at a record store called 'blutopia'. this is the first installment called "gangsta grillz". this is the rough draft, but i'm looking foward to more to come. the artwork is done by my boy dre. and you can check him out here.

there's been a few things happening since the last update. like common's 'finding forever' was number one on the charts. not to mention my interview i had with him. we'll have the link up soon.

also, the newest issue of HYPE magazine (south africa) printed a few reviews an article i did recently. here's the link: Preach reviews in HYPE magazine and Preach writes about "South Coca".

'garveyism' reviewed @ okayplayer.com

what's up yall? this is preach w/ another update. this is a pic taken w/ musiq soulchild when he came to s.c. to do the 'tom joyner' show. biggups to him as we taken the ghetto ass pic without a tripod. check out my review i did for his album @ thahpihop.com.: Musiq Soulchild-Luvanmusiq by Preach Jacobs

also, speaking of reviews, the notorious (i mean that nicely) okayplayer.com got a review of 'garveyism' up there. thanks to the staff over there and you can read it yourself: http://www.okayplayer.com/reviews/index.php/weblog/more/garveyism/.

or check it here:
Preach
Garveyism
Blusic Music; 2007

By and large, I got what I expected when I uploaded emcee Preach’s Garveyism to my MP3 player and bumped it on my way to work: okay rhymes, decent production and a couple of standout tracks. What I didn’t anticipate was how quickly the album grew on me, to the point where I stopped listening out of obligation, but started playing it out of sheer desire. For that reason, I gave Garveyism the otherwise esoteric half ?uestie; by no means is Garveyism a great or near classic album, but it’s better than average. Being a proud music pirate, I even found myself saying, “Hmm, I’ll cop this.” Money well spent, in my opinion.

After a shout-out to the late Gordon Parks, Garveyism opens with “Sunday Morning (Intro),” a head-nodding praise for new mornings, new beginnings. Up next is “Revolucion (Start Button),” producer Nicolay’s one of two contributions to the album. A forgettable track to say the least, both Preach and Nicolay redeem themselves later on with “Cool Out.” “South Coca” represents South Carolina, Preach’s home state, with a funky, soulful backdrop, a precursor for the best tracks of Garveyism. “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda” is a definite repeat listen, followed by “Dance,” another keeper. Preach shows his versatility with “Take 5,” although the song seems out of place. Skip-worthy tracks include “I Can Fly,” featuring singer Butterfly Brown, and “That Feeling,” an almost cheesy, romantic homage to the past (Transformers, Rap City with Joe Clair, etc.).

On numerous occasions, Preach overtly reminds the listener that he isn’t the best emcee and, to be blunt, he’s correct. In spite of a dope flow and an admirable ability to ride a beat, very little of his lyrics caused a raised eyebrow, an “oh shit” or a rewind. That aside, I still enjoyed Garveyism because, if nothing else, Preach raps from the heart. His rhymes are backed with a sense of conviction, as if he, as trite and cliché it sounds, poured himself into this album. Garveyism is a project full of potential, an introduction to an artist who, with improvement, can make a mark in this musical landscape or, at the very least, garner a solid following (see: Little Brother).

that's about it for now guys. as usual, q's or comments hit me: preach@preachjacobs.com.

Almost Famous #1: I'm Tired.

Almost Famous #1: I’m Tired.
You know, I’m tired of defending hip-hop. I’m tired of explaining it to people that don’t get it, I’m tired of feeling personally offended when someone within the culture makes a fool of themselves on tv, I’m tired of hearing about Imus (truth be told I had no idea who he was before the incident).

I love this music and feel that it’s help me as much as the millions more apart of it whether writing rhymes, making beats, doing graffiti or just buying the cds and tickets to the shows. But in all honesty some things just need to change. I emcee and have an album called “Garveyism” (shameless plug, yes I know. Even more shameless would be to say you can cop it from: http://www.preachjacobs.com/), and I see what goes on firsthand as an aspiring artist.
The climate that hip-hop is in now, is no way near the way it was about five or six years ago. Everyone now has a burner, has photoshop (or some people use paint, lol), everyone has Fruity Loops and everyone can put out their own cd. So what happens? No one is trying to “buy” anymore since everyone now is trying to “sell”. Dammit, if another rapper with a cd in a paper sleeve and handwritten cd opts to trade for my cd, I am gonna go ape shit on them. Why? Am I above a trade? Well….yea. But that’s not the point. The point is, why are you going to have a half assed “mix-tape” without getting it professionally done and think that it’s cool to trade it for mine that is retail ready? This my friend seems to be the issue with the hip-hop culture. There’s no shame. And despite all the garbage generated with using hip-hop as a scapegoat after Imus, I do agree that some things have to be changed.

But that doesn’t mean that I agree with the so-called ‘black leaders’ to wait for someone like Imus to talk his trash to all of a sudden make it a point to “clean hip-hop” and save face with the rest of the white community. The things that plague hip-hop has been there before Imus, so why wait til now? But all that aside, that’s not the point.
Bad language isn’t the problem. The “N bomb” isn’t the problem. Imus ain’t the problem. We are. Hip-hop generation and the corporate world that exploits it is the problem. But again, I’m tired to even go through that.
So, what’s my solution? Well, it’s simple; Fuck it. Do what you do, and be a conscious and aware person and take care of what you can handle. There’s bigger issues than bashing what’s on Sucker Free Sunday.

Think about some of the biggest rap hits of the past recent years. The majority of the songs are basically grunts, and incomplete thoughts/sentences. “Laffy Taffy’s” or “Chang Wangs” (sorry, yall just needed to get a quick ignorant song to bash and these were the first to come to mind) are all reflections of a young black community that’s illiterate. This is the reflection of these children and this seems to be the issue that we need to focus on.

From then on it’s a snowball effect where we find ways to educate the youth, we will in return have better music and hence self respect and love. This is a task that our record labels are not going to do, not Hollywood, not Jesse or Al Sharpton but instead; Us. Who is us? The emcees. The fathers. The mothers. The activists. The workers. The older generation must understand the necessity of hip-hop and it’s purpose and the younger generation must know that we’re caught up in buffoonery and have to find that balance.

I am confident that day will come. When the fans are sick of buying senseless music (i.e. we’ll just download it) and the labels go further in the hole, they will realize that the people want more. Will that stop the attacks on hip-hop? Nope. Will I be there to defend it under fire? *yawn* We’ll see. -PJ

blusic presents: ntelligence "nuclear winter"

it's been a minute and i'm back to hit you guys up with another update. i'm starting to believe that i need to treat this page more like a 'blog' than just a page about me and my album since stuff doesn't happen everyday with 'garveyism'. so, why not fill you guys in on other stuff that's running around in my brain?

first up, let me take the spotlight off of me, and point it into the direction of a great mc/brother-from-another mother cat named ntelligence. we're working on his ep 'nuclear winter: prelude to black boy lost' and it's gonna be crazy. want to check the wordsmith out? hit him up on his myspace.

also check out a new song i'm featured on by ATL native singer/songwriter Dot featuring Preach "Purple Ink". thanks for the love dot (the package will be in the mail...i'm sorry i'm a slacker!)

what else is going on? on a sad note rapper stack bundles was murdered last night. details are still kind of sketchy, and even though i wasn't too familiar with his work, a fallen soldier still hurts the same. you can check out his work here.

so much stuff is going on makes me want to quit it all and get the hell out of dodge. reading this AIM convo between baby blak and dj jazzy jeff for some reason gave a sense of comfort (why it was comfort more than frustration, i don't know). but this swipe is courtesy of okayplayer. the convo is between two frurstated hip hop artists and it helped me out, and it may help you. check it out here.

and as always, don't forget to check out the official myspace page for updates, music and crazy ass banners people try to leave on my comment page. do i sound bitter? also, peep the shows as we finally have some gigs so show up if you're in town.

there's a bunch more going on but i'll update you guys later and more often (for the two people that care..lol). anyways, biggups and love and as always q's or comments? hit me up: preach@preachjacobs.com. be easy.

also, on more garveyism related news, we're in the process of shooting a video for "Dance" (don't know how the song goes? check it out on here. and then cop that shit here. or here. i'll make sure to keep you all posted.

it's like 2:45 in the morning over here and i should be tired. *sigh* i know i'm going to regret being up this late in the morning. well, enough of my babbling. there will be some more updates coming soon. thanks for all the love and support. peace and much love. as always, q's or comments? hit a brother up: preach@preachjacobs.com. -preach (a.k.a. the jesus of cool)
